Sociology

The goal of the Sociology major is to provide students with the intellectual tools needed to analyze social phenomena theoretically and empirically. To that end, the curriculum provides a wide range of courses. During the first and second years of study students are trained in the basics of sociology and later students choose a specific area of sociology. Possible areas of specialization include gender, international migration, science/technology, globalization, nationalism, social movements, political sociology, environmental sociology, sociology of development, or other specific areas. Students are also encouraged to learn qualitative and/or quantitative research methods and conduct their own independent research projects in association with methodology courses and/or with their senior theses. The major's overarching goal is to help students realize that they can analyze social phenomena theoretically and empirically, and that sociological perspectives and analyses contribute ultimately to the betterment of societies.

Learning Goals

Students are expected to develop competence in the following areas:

  • Sociological Theories: students will have an understanding of classical and contemporary social theory and the main debates and foci of research in sociology.

  • Critical Thinking: through critical reading, writing, and debate, students will develop the ability to ask compelling questions, evaluate arguments, and draw sound conclusions.

  • Methodologies: students will understand a broad range of methodologies through which sociology generates data and acquire the ability to use qualitative and/or quantitative research methods.

  • Research Design and Its Implementation: students will develop the ability to design and implement a sociological research project. This involves working with the relevant scholarly literature, formulating research questions, and employing appropriate methods to generate relevant data.

  • Analysis: students will develop the ability to analyze data and draw sound conclusions from data analysis.

  • Communication: students will develop the ability to present their ideas both verbally and in writing.

  • Ethics: students will develop an awareness of the ethics of social science research so as to fulfill ICU's mission of creating responsible global citizens.


社会学

社会学メジャーは、社会現象を理論的・実証的に分析するために必要な知的手段を学生に提供することを目的とする。この目的に合わせカリキュラムにおいて、 社会学の理論・方法論の導入として様々なコースをオファーしている。学生はまず社会学という学問が拠って立つ基礎知識を学び、その後興味に応じて選んだ テーマについて研究を進めていくこととなる。ジェンダー、国際人口移動、科学技術、グローバリゼーション、ナショナリズム、社会運動、政治社会学、環境社 会学、開発社会学、その他メジャーの教員と共働する中で見出したトピック等、社会学的テーマは多岐にわたる。学生は質的または量的研究方法を学び、それを 基にした研究計画を、方法論の授業や卒業論文において遂行することになる。社会学メジャーの使命は、社会現象は実証的・理論的に分析することが可能であ り、社会学的思考と分析はより良い社会の構築に貢献するということを、学生自身に気付かせることにある。

Learning Goals

社会学メジャーを専修する学生は、以下の領域において力を養うことが期待される。

  • 社会理論：古典および現代の社会理論と、社会学における主要な問題と主眼を理解する力。

  • 批判的思考法：批判的に読み、書き、討論を重ねることを通じ、根元的な問題に対峙し、それを評価し、筋立った結論を導き出す力。

  • 方法論：社会学のデータの根拠となる基本的な方法論を理解し、質的または量的な研究方法を運用する力。

  • 研究計画の立案と研究の実施：社会学の研究計画を立て、実行する力。分野に関連する研究について課題を設定し、課題に対する答えとなるデータを導き出すのに最適な研究方法を選ぶ力。

  • 分析：データを分析し、確かな結論に導く力。

  • コミュニケーション：口頭ならびに文章により自分の考えを明確に表現する力。

  • 倫理：社会科学の研究において求められる倫理を知ることにより、責任ある地球市民の育成というICUの使命に応えること
