We now live in a world where crossing borders is a matter of common　practice due to rapid globalization. As people and information move at an unprecedented speed, at times we are faced with situations where we are incapable of dealing with reality using existing ideas or methods. It is important for us to observe "negotiations" and "conflicts" that occur in our everyday lives. In order to critically understand such events, we need to learn communication theories which explain the processes of establishing meaning in such relations. We must also understand linguistic as well as interpreting and translation theories which explain the media that prepare "settings" for such processes. Students majoring in Media, Communication and Culture will learn interdisciplinary theories and methodologies, and cultivate skills to actively engage with society.

Learning Goals

Media, Communication and Culture is divided into four fields, Media Studies, Communication, Translation and Interpretations, and Language and Society, which all share a common academic outlook. Students of this major will pursue studies using the following guidelines:

• • Students will learn the history of globalization and the trends of anti-globalization in order to direct their attention to the structure of authority, practiced in local, national, and global settings. The importance of not forgetting the socially vulnerable will also be stressed.

  • The subject matter to be focused on is hidden within our daily lives. The expressions and gestures that we casually use are those that have been given to us by society and are often subject to authority. Critical speculation of matters that we are inclined to overlook requires training. That is why we must understand language in social context and learn the reasons why certain words are translated into other words.

  • Courses in Media, Communication and Culture are provided to fulfill the aims of the major. It is hoped that students will face and transcend the limits of their knowledge with creativity and perseverance.

Students are expected to gain knowledge in existing theories and methodologies. Based on the knowledge, students will learn how to pose their research questions and develop research projects. Moreover, they must acquire an attitude in order to be able to critically reflect on the rise and development of new knowledge.

グローバル化が進行し、様々な局面で越境が日常化している世界に私たちは生きている。人や物や情報がかつてない速度で移動する今、既存の理論や方法論では現実に起きている事柄に対応できないことが多い。日常的な生活の場を視野に入れ、そこで生まれる〈交渉〉や〈抗争〉を観察することが求められている。現代の様々な事象を批判的にとらえるためには、関係性のなかで意味が構築されるプロセスを学ぶコミュニケーション論や、そのプロセスを準備する「場」であるメディア、さらに言語理論や通訳翻訳に関する理論を学ぶことも必要になる。「メディア・コミュニケーション・文化」が提供する多様な科目を履修することで学生は、学際的な理論と方法論を身につけ、積極的に社会にかかわりながら生きていくための方策を学ぶ。

Learning Goals

「メディア・コミュニケーション・文化」が提供する科目は、4つの領域（メディア研究、コミュニケーション、通訳と翻訳、言語と社会）に分けられるが、それらはいずれも学問的な姿勢を共有しあっている。本メジャーを履修する学生は、以下のことを視野に入れて学習する。

• グローバリズムの歴史を辿り、同時に反グローバリズムの動きを学ぶことで、「ローカル」や「ナショナル」また「グローバル」な場に働く権力の構造に目を向ける。グローバリズムの流れのなかで生まれる社会的弱者への目線も忘れないようにしたい。

• 考えるための材料は、私たちの日々の暮らしの中に埋もれている。私たちが日々なにげなく使っている言葉や身振りの「意味」は、しばしば外から与えられたもので、そこに大きな力が働いていることが多い。見過ごしがちなことを批判的に見るためには、それなりの訓練がいる。言語を社会的文脈において考える必要や、ある言葉が別の言葉へ翻訳されるときに働く力を学ぶ必要はそこにある。

• 「メディア・コミュニケーション・文化」の各科目は、いずれも上記のことを学ぶために提供されている。学生には、未知の領域（学際的な取り組み方）へ足を踏み入れる勇気と想像力が求められている。それはつまり、既存の理論や研究方法のよいところを踏襲しながらも、学際的な新しい研究方法を取り入れることを意味する。さらに、知識が生み出される過程そのものを批判的に考える姿勢も身につけるようにしたい。
